Turkey Performance Tour

TURKEY PERFORMANCE TOUR SAMPLE ITINERARY
Istanbul .. Bursa .. Panukkale .. Izmir

World Projects can customize a performance tour to Turkey for your musical ensemble.

Extend your stay or add meals, sightseeing, and local cultural activities to make this tour a unique and unforgettable experience for your students!

DAY ONE: DEPARTURE FOR ISTANBUL (meals/movies in-flight)
 
Morning: Arrive at your departure airport 3 hours prior to take off. Check in your luggage, move through security and onto your departure gate.
Afternoon: Depart for Istanbul (there may be a stop/transfer en route).
Evening: Overnight en route
 
DAY TWO: ARRIVE ISTANBUL  (D)
 
Afternoon: Arrive into Istanbul’s Ataturk International Airport. After proceeding through immigration and customs, collect your luggage and meet your local bi-lingual tour manager(s). Board the coach(es) and transfer to local hotel.

Astride the Bosphorus Strait, Istanbul bridges Asia and Europe both physically and culturally. Founded in 660 BC and known as Byzantium, Constantinople, and now Istanbul, the city has been a cultural crossroads and melting pot for over two millennia. Once the center of the great Orthodox Christian Byzantine Empire, the city was conquered by the Muslim Ottoman Empire and was home to the great caliphate for five centuries. Today, Istanbul is well known for its markets, beautiful location, and stunning architecture and is a feast for all the senses.

Upon arrival, check in to a local area hotel (TBC). You will have some free time to settle in and freshen up.

Evening: Enjoy a Welcome Dinner as a group in Istanbul and the rest of this evening is free.
 
DAY THREE: ISTANBUL (B,D) - Performance
 
Morning: Breakfast as a group at the hotel. This morning enjoy a Guided Tour of ancient Istanbul including such iconic sites as the Hagia Sophia (formally the head of the Orthodox Church then a prominent mosque and now a museum), the Hippodrome (ancient stadium), the Underground Cistern (a cathedral sized water well), and the famous Spice Bazaar.
Afternoon: Lunch on your own in Istanbul followed by more touring. Late afternoon, return to the hotel to freshen up. Transfer to this evening’s performance venue.
Evening: Dinner as a group near the concert venue. Return to the venue to prepare for your performance. Performance in Istanbul (possibly an exchange with a local group at a local university (such as Kultur University) or a local church such as the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit (TBC). Afterwards, return to the hotel.
 
DAY FOUR: ISTANBUL (B, D) - Performance
 
Morning: Breakfast as a group at the hotel. This morning, enjoy a Guided Tour of Ottoman Istanbul including such sites as the Topkapi Palace (home of the all-powerful Caliph), the stunning Blue Mosque, and the Grand Bazaar (Istanbul’s shopping mecca for hundreds of years with over 3000 shops and stalls).
Afternoon: Lunch on your own in Istanbul. Late afternoon, return to the hotel to freshen up. Transfer to this evening’s performance venue.
Evening: Dinner as a group near the concert venue. Return to the venue to prepare for your performance. Performance in Istanbul (possibly an exchange with a local group at a local university (such as Kultur University) or a local church such as the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit (TBC). Afterwards, return to the hotel.
 
DAY FIVE: ISTANBUL → BURSA (B, D)
 
Morning: Breakfast as a group at the hotel. Check out of the hotel, board the coaches and begin your journey to Bursa (~4 hour drive total). En route, enjoy a guided tour of Nicea. Nicea is an ancient Greek city located on Lake Ascanius. Nicea was a center of early Christianity and much of today’s Christian doctrine was adopted in Nicea.
Afternoon: Lunch on your own in Izmir (near Nicea) then continue to Bursa. Arrive into Bursa and check into local hotel. The fourth largest city in Turkey, Bursa was the 1st capitol of the great Ottoman Empire (before it moved to Istanbul) and is a fascinating gateway into understanding modern Turkey. You will have some free time to settle in and freshen up. This would be a great opportunity to visit one of Bursa’s famous thermal baths (cost on own).
Evening: Dinner as a group in Bursa and the rest of this evening is free.
 
DAY SIX: BURSA (B, D) - Performance
 
Morning: Breakfast as a group at the hotel. This morning, enjoy a guided tour of Bursa – see sites such as the Grand Mosque and Koza Han Bazaar and enjoy a visit to the Cumali Kazik Village (continuously occupied for over 700 years, much of the early Ottoman Empire has been preserved in the village).
Afternoon: Lunch on own in Bursa. Late afternoon, return to the hotel to freshen up. Transfer to this evening’s performance venue.
Evening: Dinner as a group near the concert venue. Return to the venue to prepare for your performance. Performance in Bursa (possibly an exchange with a local group at a local university (such as Uludag University) or a local church or cultural center (TBC). Afterwards, return to the hotel.

 

Bersa Grand Mosque

DAY SEVEN: BURSA →  PAMUKKALE (B, D)
 
Morning: Breakfast as a group at the hotel. Check out of the hotel, board the coaches and begin your journey to Pamukkale (~ 5-6 hour drive).
Afternoon: Lunch on own en route. This afternoon, enjoy a tour of the ancient Roman ruins at Hierapolis. Late Afternoon Arrive into Pamukkale and check into local hotel. Well known for its natural hot springs, Pamukkale means “cotton castle” in Turkish and refers to the terraces of carbonate minerals left by the flowing water.

You will have some free time to settle in and freshen up. Enjoy time to explore Pamukkale famous travertines pools and waterfalls which flow through village.

Evening: Dinner as a group in Pamukkale and the rest of this evening is free.

 

Mineral Terraces

DAY EIGHT: PAMUKKALE (B, D) - Performance
 
Morning: Breakfast as a group at the hotel. This morning, enjoy a visit to one of the best preserved Greek ruins in Turkey – the village of Aphrodisias. Dedicated to the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodisias was built over one of the most famous marble quarries in the world. Marble from Aphrodisias was used for statues and buildings throughout the Greek and Roman world.
 Afternoon:  Lunch on own. Late afternoon, return to the hotel to freshen up. Transfer to this evening’s performance venue.
 Evening: Dinner as a group near the concert venue. Return to the venue to prepare for your performance. Performance in Pamukkale (possibly an exchange with a local group at a local university (such as Pamukkale University) or a local church or cultural center (TBC). Afterwards, return to the hotel.
 
DAY NINE: PAMUKKALE → IZMIR (B, D)
 
 
Morning: Breakfast as a group at the hotel. Check out of the hotel, board the coaches and begin your journey to Pamukkale (~ 3.5 hour drive total). En route, enjoy a stop in Sardes – ancient capital of the Lycians and an important Jewish and early Christian site (one of the Seven Churches mentioned in the Book of Revelations is located in Sardes).
 Afternoon: Lunch on own en route. Arrive into Izmir and check into local hotel.

Founded by the Trojans over 3000 years ago, the ancient city of Izmir is the birthplace of Homer and was fought over by Greeks, Romans, and Lydians. Today, this pleasant city located on the Aegean Sea is Turkey’s 3rd largest city and considered the most progressive and liberal city in Turkey.

You will have some free time to settle in and freshen up. This afternoon, enjoy time to explore the Kordon (waterfront promenade) and Izmir’s beaches.

 Evening: Dinner as a group in Izmir and the rest of this evening is free.

 

 

 

DAY TEN: IZMIR (B, D) - Performance
 
 
Morning: Breakfast as a group at the hotel. This morning, enjoy a talk and demonstrations with experts on Turkish rugs and kilims (fine-woven carpets). Transfer to Ephesus. The best preserved Greek city in Turkey, Ephesus has been occupied for at least 12,000 years and is one of the first cities built in Turkey. The city was famed for the Temple of Artemis (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) and is also an important early Christian site as home to the House of the Virgin Mary (where Mary is said to have spent her later years) as well as where the Book of John is said to have been written. Enjoy a guided tour of Ephesus including the House of the Virgin Mary.
 Afternoon: Lunch on own. Late afternoon, return to the hotel to freshen up. Transfer to this evening’s performance venue.
 Evening: Dinner as a group near the concert venue. Return to the venue to prepare for your performance. Performance in Izmir - possibly an exchange with a local group at a local university (such as Yasar University) or a local church (such as St. John Anglican) or a cultural center (TBC). Afterwards, return to the hotel.
 
DAY ELEVEN: IZMIR (B, D)
 
Morning: Breakfast as a group at the hotel. Check out of the hotel, board the coaches and begin your journey to Istanbul (all day drive and ferry). En route, enjoy a stop in Pergamum and visit the famous Acropolis of Pergamum (an ancient Greek site).
 Afternoon:  Lunch on own en route. Board your fast ferry in Bandirma or Bursa and enjoy crossing the Sea of Marmara to Instanbul. Early Evening Arrive into Istanbul and transfer to hotel – check-in upon arrival. You will have some free time to settle in and freshen up.
 Evening: This evening, enjoy a Farewell to Turkey dinner as a group then return to the hotel.
 
DAY TWELVE: ISTANBUL DEPARTURE (B, MEALS / MOVIES IN-FLIGHT)
 
Morning: Breakfast at the hotel. Check out of the hotel and depart for Istanbul’s Ataturk International Airport. Upon arrival, check in your luggage, move through security and onto your departure gate. Board the plane and depart Istanbul.
